Every day, millions of people shop in supermarkets. You choose what to buy… or do you? Supermarkets are planned very carefully to make you buy more.
Look at the shelves. The most expensive things are often at eye level, where you see them first. Cheaper things are often on the top or bottom shelf.
Do you need milk? Milk is often at the back of the shop. To get it, you must walk past many other things. Maybe you will put some of them in your shopping cart too.
Listen. Some shops play slow, quiet music. When the music is slow, many people walk more slowly – and have more time to look and buy.
Now look at the labels. One bottle of milk says “1% fat”. Another says “99% fat free”. They sound different, but they mean the same thing!
Near the checkout, there are sweets and small toys. Children see them while they wait in the queue.
Everything in the shop seems to say “Buy me!” So what can you do? Make a shopping list at home, and only buy what is on your list.
