The paper village

(Bài đọc tự viết; làng nghề và nhân vật là giả định.)

A For more than three hundred years, the people of Lam Village have made paper by hand from the bark of a local tree. The thin, strong paper was once used for official documents, religious books and traditional paintings, and almost every family in the village was involved in some stage of the work.

B By the 1990s, however, the craft was disappearing. Machine-made paper was cheaper and faster to produce, and young people preferred to move to the city, where factory jobs paid better. At one point, only four families were still making paper, and most of the craftsmen were over sixty.

C The situation began to change in 2010, when Ms Hanh, a former art teacher who had grown up in the village, opened a small workshop for visitors. Tourists could watch each stage of the process and then make a sheet of paper themselves. “People were amazed that something so beautiful could be made with just water, bark and patience,” she says.

D The workshop was so popular that other families started to welcome visitors too. Today, around twenty families make paper again, and some young people have returned from the city to learn the craft from their grandparents. Artists now buy the paper for painting and printing, and small shops sell notebooks, cards and lamps as souvenirs.

E Not everyone is happy with the changes. Some older craftsmen worry that the paper is now made too quickly to satisfy tourists, and that its quality has fallen. Ms Hanh agrees that this is a risk. She has started a village association that checks the quality of the paper sold under the village name.
