- Lecturer
- Today we're looking at why people often spend more than they intended. I'll focus on three ideas, and then give you some practical advice.
- Lecturer
- The first is called anchoring. This refers to the way the first price we see affects how we judge every price after it. Imagine you see a jacket with an original price of two hundred dollars, now reduced to a hundred and twenty. The first number acts as an anchor, so a hundred and twenty feels like a bargain – even if you'd never normally pay that much for a jacket.
- Lecturer
- The second idea is the decoy. Companies sometimes offer three options, where one exists mainly to make another look attractive. Take a cinema selling popcorn: small for four dollars, medium for seven, and large for eight. Very few people buy the medium. Its real job is to make the large one look like excellent value.
- Lecturer
- Thirdly, there's impulse buying – purchases we make without planning, often because of emotions. Shops place sweets and small items near the checkout because people are tired and waiting, which makes them more likely to grab something.
- Lecturer
- It's also worth mentioning subscriptions. Many services offer a free trial, but you have to cancel before it ends. A lot of people forget, and they keep paying every month for something they rarely use.
- Lecturer
- So, what can you do? First, set a budget before you go shopping, and decide what you need. Second, wait twenty-four hours before any non-essential purchase over a certain amount. And finally, check your bank statement every month for subscriptions you no longer want.
