Lecturer
Today we're looking at satellites – objects that travel in a regular path, or orbit, around a planet. The Moon is a natural satellite, of course, but I'll focus on artificial ones.
Lecturer
Let's begin with their uses. Most people think first of communication – television signals and phone calls. But satellites are also essential for navigation; the maps on your phone depend on them. And a third major use is observation: satellites monitor weather, forests, ice and even traffic.
Lecturer
Now, satellites operate at different heights. Those in low orbits travel very fast and circle the Earth many times a day. They're useful for taking detailed images. Others are placed much higher, where they move at the same speed as the Earth rotates, so they appear to stay above one spot. These are ideal for weather forecasting and broadcasting.
Lecturer
This brings me to a growing problem: space debris. This includes old satellites that no longer work and fragments from collisions. Even a tiny fragment travels so fast that it can seriously damage a working satellite.
Lecturer
And the problem is set to get worse. Private companies are launching large groups of small satellites, and the number in low orbit is likely to keep rising sharply over the next decade. If two objects collide, the pieces could cause further collisions – a kind of chain reaction.
Lecturer
What can be done? One approach is to design satellites so that, at the end of their working life, they move down into the atmosphere, where they burn up. Several experimental projects are also testing ways to capture debris, for example using nets. However, these technologies are unlikely to be widely used for some years, partly because of the cost.
Lecturer
In the next session, we'll look at the legal question of who is responsible for debris in space.

✅ Mức chắc chắn trong bài giảng

  1. “The problem is set to get worse.” – the lecturer is…

  2. Debris-capture technologies will be widely used…

🧩 3. Ngôn ngữ trọng tâm – 10 phút: dự đoán trong Task 1 & Task 2

Chọn cụm dự đoán phù hợp

  1. According to the projections, the number of satellites is to double by 2035.
  2. A new space station is to open next year, according to the plan.
  3. Without new rules, the problem is to become more serious.
  4. By 2040, the figure reached 50,000, the graph suggests.

🎧 4. Thực hành – 25 phút

  1. Nghe lại, mở lời thoại; gạch mọi dự đoán và ghi mức chắc chắn (10 phút).
  2. Tóm tắt 1 phút bài giảng: uses – orbits – debris – solutions (5 phút).
  3. Viết 4 câu dự đoán về công nghệ trong ngành của bạn, 4 mức chắc chắn khác nhau (10 phút).

💼 Dùng ngay – giải thích vấn đề kỹ thuật bằng so sánh đời thường (thêm 5–10 phút)

  1. Think of it like a busy motorway – the more vehicles there are, the higher the risk of an accident.

Hãy nghĩ như một đường cao tốc đông xe – càng nhiều xe, càng dễ va chạm.

  2. In simple terms, the system checks the data every hour and flags anything unusual.

Nói đơn giản, hệ thống kiểm tra dữ liệu mỗi giờ và đánh dấu điều bất thường.

  3. The main point is that we need to fix this before it affects customers.

Ý chính là cần sửa trước khi ảnh hưởng khách hàng.

  4. Does that make sense, or shall I go through it again?

Như vậy rõ chưa, hay tôi giải thích lại nhé?
