- Lecturer
- Today I'm going to discuss how cities can make sure they have enough water as their populations grow. I'll look at the sources cities depend on, the problem of waste, and some newer approaches.
- Lecturer
- Most cities rely on two main sources. The first is surface water – rivers and lakes, often stored in reservoirs. The second is groundwater, which is pumped from underground. The trouble with groundwater is that, if it's taken faster than it's replaced by rain, the level drops, and in some places the ground itself can begin to sink.
- Lecturer
- Now, a surprising amount of water never reaches the consumer. In older systems, pipes crack and water escapes. In the hypothetical city of Corvale, engineers estimated that roughly a quarter of the water entering the network was lost in this way. So one of the cheapest ways to increase supply isn't to find new water, but to repair leaks.
- Lecturer
- The second strategy concerns demand. Cities can encourage people to use less – through pricing, for example, where heavy users pay a higher rate, or through public campaigns during periods of drought. These measures can be effective, although they're sometimes unpopular.
- Lecturer
- Third, there's reuse. Wastewater – from kitchens, bathrooms and so on – can be treated and used again, mainly for things like irrigation in parks or cooling in factories. Some people find the idea unpleasant, but with modern treatment it's considered safe for these purposes.
- Lecturer
- And finally, rainwater harvesting – collecting rain from roofs and storing it in tanks. On its own, this won't supply a city, but it can reduce pressure on the main network, especially in places with heavy seasonal rain.
- Lecturer
- The key message is that no single solution is enough. The most resilient cities tend to combine several approaches.

🧩 3. Ngôn ngữ trọng tâm – 10 phút: 3 kỹ thuật paraphrase
| Câu gốc | Kỹ thuật | Paraphrase |
|---|---|---|
| A quarter of the water is lost through leaks. | đồng nghĩa | Around 25% of the water escapes through cracked pipes. |
| Cities reuse wastewater. | chủ động → bị động | Wastewater is reused by cities. |
| Demand is increasing rapidly. | đổi loại từ | There has been a rapid increase in demand. |
Paraphrase
- Water use rose sharply. → There was a sharp in water use.
- The city repaired its pipes. → The pipes by the city.
- Leaks are the main cause of loss. → Leaks are responsible for the loss.
- People must use less water. → Water must be reduced.

On Monday morning, we found a leak under the sink in the staff kitchen.
Sáng thứ Hai, chúng tôi phát hiện rò rỉ dưới bồn rửa ở bếp nhân viên.
The immediate action was to turn off the water supply and put up a warning sign.
Hành động ngay là khóa nước và đặt biển cảnh báo.
The root cause appears to be an old pipe connection.
Nguyên nhân gốc có vẻ là một khớp nối ống cũ.
As a corrective action, all similar connections will be checked by Friday.
Biện pháp khắc phục: kiểm tra mọi khớp nối tương tự trước thứ Sáu.
