Overall, there are seven main stages, beginning with the intake of water from a river and ending with its delivery to homes and businesses. The process involves both physical methods, which remove solid material, and a chemical stage, which kills harmful organisms.

Initially, water is pumped from the river into the treatment plant, where it passes through screens that remove large objects such as branches and litter. It then flows into a settling tank, in which heavier particles, known as sediment, gradually sink to the bottom.

After this, the water is passed through a sand filter to remove smaller particles that remain. The next stage involves disinfection, during which chlorine is added to destroy any bacteria. Once it has been treated, the clean water is held in a storage tank until it is needed. Finally, it is distributed to homes and businesses through a network of underground pipes.

I am writing regarding my water bill for the period from 1 January to 31 March, account number WS-58213, which I received last week.

The bill states that I used 96 cubic metres of water and charges me a total of $312. This is roughly three times the amount I usually pay. Over the past year, my quarterly bills have been between $95 and $110, and my usage has not changed. I live alone, I work full-time, and I have not installed any new appliances.

I also checked the meter myself on 2 April, and it showed a reading of 1,482. However, the bill gives an estimated reading of 1,540, which suggests that the meter was not actually read. In addition, I have had a plumber check the property, and he found no leaks.

I would therefore be grateful if you could arrange for an official meter reading and send me a corrected bill. I would also ask you to put the current payment on hold until the matter has been resolved. I have attached a photo of the meter showing the date and reading.

Incident report – 9 March

Location: Staff kitchen, 2nd floor. What happened: Water leaked from under the sink; the floor became slippery. No one was hurt. Immediate action: Water supply turned off; warning sign placed. Root cause: Loose pipe connection. Corrective action: Connection tightened on 9 March; all kitchen connections to be checked monthly. Reported by: Long, Facilities.
