- So, Lina, you said in your email that you're torn between going straight into a job and doing a master's. Where are you leaning at the moment?
- Lina
- Honestly, towards the master's. Everyone keeps telling me that a lot of entry-level jobs will be automated, so I feel I need a higher qualification just to compete.
- Mark
- I'd be a bit careful with that reasoning. Some routine tasks are bound to be automated – data entry, basic report formatting, that kind of thing. But that's not the same as whole jobs disappearing. Most roles are a mix of tasks, and the parts involving judgement and dealing with people are much harder to automate.
- Lina
- So you don't think a master's is worth it?
- Mark
- I didn't say that. It might well be the right choice – but for the right reason. If there's a specialism you genuinely want, like water management, a master's makes sense. If it's mainly a defensive move, you could end up with more debt and the same uncertainty.
- Lina
- That's fair. The thing is, I'm not sure which specialism I want.
- Mark
- Then there's a strong argument for working first. Two years in a consultancy or a local authority would show you which areas you enjoy. And by the time you apply for a master's, you'll have built up experience that makes your application much stronger.
- Lina
- But won't I lose momentum? I'm used to studying now.
- Mark
- Some people do find it hard to go back. That's a real trade-off. One way round it is to choose an employer that supports part-time study. Quite a few larger organisations do, although you'd need to check the conditions carefully – some ask you to stay for a certain period afterwards.
- Lina
- I hadn't thought of that. What about skills? Is there anything I should be doing now?
- Mark
- The one I'd prioritise is data analysis. Whatever you end up doing in environmental work, you're likely to be dealing with large data sets, and employers repeatedly tell us graduates lack confidence there. Communication matters too, but you already have strong presentation experience from your society work.
- Lina
- OK. So the first thing I'll do is look for jobs at employers that support part-time study.
- Mark
- Before that, though, I'd update your CV so that it highlights the data project from your final year. That's the strongest thing on it, and at the moment it's hidden on page two.
