A lecturer in linguistics discusses whether the language we speak affects how we think (giả định)

Lecturer
Today's question is an old one: does the language we speak shape the way we think? It's an idea that many people find intuitively appealing, and it's often referred to as linguistic relativity.
Lecturer
It's important to distinguish between two versions of this idea. The strong version claims that language determines thought – that if your language has no word for something, you simply can't think about it. Most researchers today consider this version untenable. People regularly think about things they have no single word for, and they can learn new concepts when they learn new words.
Lecturer
The weak version is more modest. It suggests that language may influence what we pay attention to, how we categorise experience, and how easily we remember certain information. This version has attracted considerably more support, although the size of the effects is still debated.
Lecturer
Let me give you some examples from the research literature, described in general terms. Languages differ in how they divide up the colour spectrum. Some languages have separate basic words for what English speakers would call light blue and dark blue. In laboratory tasks, speakers of such languages have sometimes been found to distinguish between those shades slightly faster. The difference is small, but it suggests that categories in language can affect perception, at least under certain conditions.
Lecturer
A second area concerns spatial orientation. In English, we usually describe location relative to our own bodies – the cup is to my left. Some languages, however, typically use fixed directions, like north and south, even for small objects on a table. Speakers of these languages appear to keep track of compass directions remarkably well, which suggests that habitual ways of speaking may train particular kinds of attention.
Lecturer
Now, we need to be careful about interpretation. Correlation is not causation. Communities that use compass directions may also differ in their environment or way of life, and these factors could explain both the language and the skill. That's why researchers try to design experiments that isolate the effect of language itself.
Lecturer
So what's the practical relevance? For language learners, it suggests that learning another language isn't just about vocabulary and grammar. It may also involve learning to notice different things. And in cross-cultural communication, it's a reminder that misunderstandings may arise not only from vocabulary but from different habits of categorisation.

  1. Use one idea per sentence, and keep sentences fairly short.

Mỗi câu một ý, giữ câu tương đối ngắn.

  2. Avoid idioms and phrasal verbs that might be misinterpreted – write 'postpone' rather than 'put off'.

Tránh thành ngữ và cụm động từ dễ bị hiểu sai – viết “postpone” thay vì “put off”.

  3. Write dates in full, such as 7 December 2026, to avoid confusion.

Viết ngày đầy đủ, ví dụ 7 December 2026, để tránh nhầm lẫn.

  4. End with a clear question or action, so the reader knows exactly what to do.

Kết bằng câu hỏi hoặc hành động rõ ràng để người đọc biết phải làm gì.
