- Lecturer
- Good evening, everyone. Tonight I'd like to explain how astronomers find planets orbiting stars other than our Sun – what we call exoplanets – and what we can and can't say about them.
- Lecturer
- The first thing to understand is that we almost never see these planets directly. They're far too small and too faint compared with the stars they orbit. Instead, we detect them indirectly.
- Lecturer
- One of the most productive methods relies on what's called a transit – that is, when a planet passes in front of its star from our point of view. When this happens, the star appears very slightly dimmer for a few hours. What we actually observe is a small, regular dip in brightness. From that observation, we infer that something is blocking part of the light at regular intervals – most likely a planet.
- Lecturer
- The size of the dip tells us roughly how large the planet is compared with its star, and the time between dips tells us how long the planet takes to complete one orbit. These are inferences, but fairly reliable ones.
- Lecturer
- Things become more speculative when we ask whether a planet could support life. Astronomers talk about the habitable zone – the range of distances from a star where temperatures might allow liquid water on a planet's surface. Being in this zone doesn't mean a planet is habitable; it simply means it's not ruled out on the basis of temperature.
- Lecturer
- Let me give you a hypothetical example. Imagine we find a planet, which we'll call K-9b, in the habitable zone of a small star. Light passing through its atmosphere during a transit might reveal certain gases. One possibility is that some of these gases are produced by living things. However, they can also be produced by geological processes, such as volcanoes. So, if such a signal were detected, it would be exciting, but it would not on its own be evidence of life.
- Lecturer
- This is why the language scientists use matters so much. Headlines may say 'Earth-like planet discovered', but what astronomers usually mean is 'a planet of roughly similar size, at a distance where liquid water is possible'. Confirming anything more would require many further observations, and possibly instruments that haven't been built yet.
