- Welcome to the Blue Bay Marine Programme. I'm Lan, the volunteer coordinator. Before you start, I'd like to explain what we do and what we'll be asking of you.

- The programme was set up eight years ago, after local fishermen noticed that their catches had fallen dramatically. Since then, part of the bay has become a protected reserve where fishing isn't permitted, and the aim is to give fish populations a chance to recover.

- Volunteers help in several ways. The most important is our monthly underwater survey, where trained divers count fish and record the condition of the coral. You'll need a diving qualification for that, so it's not open to everyone. If you don't dive, you can still join our beach clean-ups, which take place every Saturday morning, or help us monitor the seagrass beds from the shore at low tide.
- Coordinator
- Some people ask whether they can help with turtle nesting. That's something we'd love to offer, but at the moment it's handled only by our permanent staff, because the nests are so easily disturbed. Similarly, we don't let volunteers handle any marine animals, even injured ones – please call a staff member instead.

- A word about timing. From May to August is the breeding season for several fish species, so during those months boats aren't allowed in the northern part of the reserve. Surveys still go ahead, but only in the southern section.

- As for results, it's still early days, but our surveys suggest that fish numbers inside the reserve have increased steadily, and, interestingly, some fishermen say their catches just outside the boundary have improved too. We can't yet prove the reserve is the reason, but it's encouraging.

- Finally, all volunteers attend a two-hour safety briefing before their first activity. It's held on the first Thursday of each month, and you'll receive a programme T-shirt there – please wear it at every event so the public can recognise you.
