- Receptionist
- Good afternoon, Lakeside Hotel events team. How can I help?
- Caller
- Hello, I'd like to book a meeting room for a training day for my company.
- Receptionist
- Certainly. Could I take your name first?
- Caller
- It's Rebecca Lindqvist. That's L-I-N-D-Q-V-I-S-T.
- Receptionist
- Thank you. And the date you have in mind?
- Caller
- Thursday the 18th of February. Actually, sorry – can we make it Tuesday the 16th? Some of our team are away on the Thursday.
- Receptionist
- Tuesday the 16th is fine. How many people will there be?
- Caller
- About twenty-five, but it could go up to thirty.
- Receptionist
- Then I'd suggest the Garden Room, which holds up to thirty-five. The Lake Room is smaller – it only takes twenty.
- Caller
- The Garden Room, then. What does it cost?
- Receptionist
- The full-day rate is 650 pounds, which includes the projector and Wi-Fi. Lunch is extra – it's 18 pounds per person for the buffet, or 24 for a sit-down meal.
- Caller
- We'll go for the buffet. And could we have coffee in the morning and afternoon?
- Receptionist
- Of course. Refreshments are included in the room rate if you book lunch with us.
- Caller
- Excellent. Is parking available?
- Receptionist
- Yes, there's a free car park behind the hotel, but it fills up quickly, so I'd recommend people arrive before half past eight.
- Caller
- Good to know. How do I confirm the booking?
- Receptionist
- We'll need a deposit of 20 per cent within seven days. I'll email you a booking form this afternoon.
- Caller
- Perfect, thank you.

A city council officer introduces a new bike-hire scheme on local radio (giả định)

- Officer
- Thanks for having me. Our new bike-hire scheme launches next month, and I'd like to explain how it works.
- Officer
- There'll be forty docking stations across the city to begin with. The largest is at the central railway station, with spaces for sixty bikes. Others are at the university, the hospital, the main shopping centre and along the river path.
- Officer
- To use a bike, you'll need to download our app and register a payment card. You'll then scan a code on the bike to unlock it. Unlike some schemes, you don't need to pay a membership fee – you simply pay for the time you use.
- Officer
- The first thirty minutes of every journey are free, which we hope will encourage short trips instead of driving. After that, it's one pound for each additional thirty minutes. If a bike isn't returned within twenty-four hours, there's a charge to cover the cost of recovering it.
- Officer
- All bikes are electric-assisted, which makes the hills in the north of the city much more manageable. Their batteries are charged overnight by our maintenance team, so you won't need to plug them in yourself.
- Officer
- A few people have asked about safety. Helmets aren't supplied with the bikes, because of hygiene concerns, but we're offering a discount voucher for helmets at three local shops. We'll also be running free cycling confidence sessions every Saturday morning in Riverside Park for anyone who hasn't cycled for a while.
- Officer
- Finally, users must be at least sixteen years old, and anyone between sixteen and eighteen will need a parent to approve their account.

Two environmental science students, Priya and Tom, discuss their presentation on community gardens with their tutor (giả định)

- Tutor
- So, how's the presentation on community gardens coming along?
- Priya
- Quite well. We've visited three gardens in the city and interviewed the organisers. We're planning to start with a short history of community gardening and then move on to our case studies.
- Tutor
- I'd be careful with the history – audiences tend to lose interest quickly. Could you open with something more striking?
- Tom
- We could start with a photo of the Hillcrest garden before and after – it used to be a car park.
- Tutor
- That's much stronger. What did you find out from the visits?
- Priya
- The main surprise was that food production wasn't the most important thing for most members. At Hillcrest especially, people said they came mainly for the social contact.
- Tom
- Although at the Eastside garden it was more about growing affordable vegetables – a lot of members there have large families.
- Priya
- True. And the third one, Millbank, is run with a local school, so the focus is education.
- Tutor
- Interesting. Have you thought about any problems the gardens face?
- Tom
- The biggest one is security of land. Two of the gardens are on land owned by the council, and their leases only run for five years. The organisers worry about investing in them.
- Priya
- And at Eastside, the issue is water – there's no mains supply, so they rely on collecting rainwater, which isn't enough in the dry season.
- Tutor
- Good. How will you divide the presentation?
- Tom
- I'll present the case studies, because I did most of the interviews. Priya's going to do the analysis and the recommendations.
- Priya
- And we'd like to finish by asking the audience a question rather than just summarising.
- Tutor
- Nice idea – just make sure you leave time for it. Ten minutes goes very fast.

A lecturer in psychology gives a talk on how habits form and change (giả định)
Nghe tối đa 2 lần trước khi xem lời thoại.
📄 Xem lời thoại (sau khi làm bài)
- Lecturer
- Today we're looking at habits – the behaviours we repeat so often that we perform them almost automatically.
- Lecturer
- Researchers often describe a habit as a loop with three parts. First, there's a cue – something in the environment, such as a time of day or a place, that triggers the behaviour. Then there's the routine itself – the behaviour we perform. And finally there's a reward, which makes us more likely to repeat it.
- Lecturer
- One important point is that habits are strongly linked to context. This is why people who move house or start a new job often find it easier to change their habits – the old cues are no longer there. Some researchers describe this as a window of opportunity.
- Lecturer
- How long does it take to form a new habit? You may have heard a specific number of days quoted. In reality, the time varies enormously between people and between behaviours. Simple actions, like drinking a glass of water after breakfast, may become automatic fairly quickly, whereas more demanding ones, like daily exercise, generally take much longer.
- Lecturer
- What about breaking bad habits? Relying on willpower alone tends to be unreliable, particularly when people are tired or stressed. A more effective strategy is often to change the environment so that the cue is removed or the behaviour becomes more difficult. For example, someone trying to spend less time on their phone might keep it in another room while working.
- Lecturer
- Another approach is called habit stacking – attaching a new behaviour to an existing one. Someone who wants to practise vocabulary might do it every time they wait for the kettle to boil. The existing habit acts as the cue.
- Lecturer
- Finally, a word about missing a day. Many people believe that if they break the chain once, they have failed. However, occasional lapses appear to make relatively little difference to whether a habit forms, as long as the person returns to the behaviour quickly. Consistency over time matters more than perfection.
