A Open-plan offices – large shared spaces without private rooms – became popular partly because they were expected to encourage communication. It is often claimed that removing walls leads people to talk more and share ideas. The evidence for this is less clear than its supporters suggest.
B In the hypothetical firm Corvane, managers measured how often staff interacted before and after moving from individual offices into an open-plan floor. Face-to-face conversations actually fell, while the number of emails and messages rose. Many employees said they felt watched and preferred to communicate in writing rather than be overheard.
C This does not mean that open-plan offices have no benefits. They are cheaper to build and allow companies to fit more staff into the same space. Some teams that need constant coordination, such as customer service groups, report that sitting together helps them respond quickly.
D The most successful designs, according to Corvane’s facilities manager, Iris Chen, offer a mix of spaces: open areas for teamwork, quiet rooms for concentration, and small meeting rooms for private conversations. In her view, the real question is not whether an office should be open or closed, but whether people can choose the space that suits each task.
