Draft — to be reviewed by a legal professional, especially the section on Speaking practice (Jess) accounts.
This is a translation. If the English and Vietnamese versions differ, the Vietnamese version is the original.
The website sets no tracking cookies, uses no analytics tools and shows no adverts. Lessons and information pages do not need an account. Accounts exist only for Speaking practice (Jess) and are created by the administrator.
Voice recording in lessons
When you press 🎙 Record in a lesson, your browser asks for permission to use the microphone. The recording stays only in your browser’s memory on your device so you can listen back to it. It is not sent to our server and is lost when you reload or close the page.
The 🔊 listen button
The listen button uses the voices built into your browser or phone. With some voices, the browser may send the text of the sentence to be read (not your voice) to the browser maker’s speech service.
Video
Videos are embedded from YouTube (youtube-nocookie.com) and only load when you press play. At that point, YouTube/Google may receive data under their own policies.
Speaking practice with Jess (account required)
Accounts: nobody can sign up on their own. The administrator creates an account and sends the login details to the learner.
We store (in the website’s Cloudflare D1 database):
- Account details: email, name, a one-way encrypted password (nobody can read back the original password), role, lock status, expiry date and daily speaking limit.
- A learning profile filled in by you or the administrator: current band, target band, a few lines about your work or background, your goal, how much explanation in Vietnamese you want, and your time zone.
- When the account was created, when it was last used, and the number of failed logins (to lock the account temporarily if someone guesses passwords).
- The number of speaking turns and seconds of speech per day (to apply the daily limit).
- Notes at the end of each session: a summary, mistakes and corrections, useful phrases, sounds to practise, an estimated band and the session length. Jess uses these notes to review your mistakes in later sessions.
We do not store your voice recordings, and we do not store the conversation word for word (only the summary notes above).
AI processing: your voice recording is sent to Cloudflare Workers AI to be turned into text; the conversation text is sent to Workers AI so Jess can reply and write the end-of-session notes. According to Cloudflare’s documentation, for standard requests Workers AI does not keep the content once processing is finished and does not use customer content to train AI models.
Login cookie: when you log in, the site sets one cookie named jess_session to keep you logged in for up to 30 days. It is needed to log in, is not used for tracking, and is cancelled when you log out.
Who can see it: you can see your own profile and notes. The administrator can see the list of accounts and usage figures on the admin page, and technically has access to the database. We do not sell or share this data with anyone else, apart from processing through Cloudflare as described above.
How long we keep it: every learner account has an expiry date. One month (30 days) after the expiry date, unless the account is extended, the account and all the data above (profile, notes, usage figures, login sessions) are deleted automatically. Deletion runs alongside visits to Speaking practice, so if nobody uses it during that time, deletion may take a few days longer.
Your rights: you can ask to see, correct or delete your account and all its notes by contacting the administrator (details on the About page). We handle deletion requests within one month of receiving them and let you know when it is done.
Learners under 18
- A Speaking practice account is only created for someone under 18 when a parent or guardian has agreed to the child using it and to the data being stored as described above. The administrator records the date the agreement was received; we do not store any further information about the parent on the website.
- A child’s voice is not stored on the server: recordings are only turned into text as described above.
- Parents can ask to see, correct or delete their child’s data, or withdraw their agreement, at any time. When agreement is withdrawn, the account is locked straight away and the data is deleted within one month.
Language choice
Pages always open in Vietnamese and never switch to another language on their own.
When you press English or Tiếng Việt, your browser remembers this choice on your device (in the browser’s localStorage). The choice is not sent anywhere. You can delete it by clearing this site’s data in your browser settings.
If you have not chosen a language and your browser does not use Vietnamese, the page asks Cloudflare (the service that hosts this website) one question: “Is this visit from Vietnam?”. The page only receives yes, no or unknown, to decide whether to show a short note offering the English version. We do not store your IP address or your country and do not log this answer. Cloudflare works out the country from the IP address, as it does for every visit to a website, under Cloudflare’s own policies.
