A When Brightline, a small software company, opened its first office in 2018, it had only twelve employees. Today it employs more than two hundred people. The company’s manager, Tuan, believes that one of the main reasons for this growth is the way the company trains its staff.

B Every new employee spends their first two weeks in a training programme before they start their normal job. During this time, they learn about the company’s products and practise working in small teams. Each new worker also has a mentor – an experienced colleague who answers their questions and gives advice for the first six months.

C Training does not stop after the first year. Every Friday afternoon, the office closes for two hours so that employees can learn new skills. Some take online courses in programming, while others join English classes run by a teacher who visits the office. “Our customers are in many countries,” Tuan explains, “so good communication is as important as technical knowledge.”

D Of course, training is expensive, and some business owners worry that staff will leave for a better salary after the company has paid for their courses. Tuan accepts that this sometimes happens. However, he believes that people who feel the company is investing in them are more likely to stay, and they are usually more productive.

E The company now plans to open a second office in Da Nang next year. Tuan says the new office will follow the same model, but it will also offer training for university students who want work experience during their summer holidays.
