Farming on the roof

A On top of a five-storey car park in the centre of a busy city, rows of lettuce, herbs and tomatoes grow in long wooden boxes. The farm belongs to GreenTop, a small company started in 2019 by two former office workers, Lucia and Ben. “We wanted to show that fresh food can be grown where people actually live,” says Lucia.
B At first, the project faced several problems. The roof was too exposed to strong winds, and some plants were damaged in the first year. The team solved this by building low glass walls around the edges. They also discovered that ordinary soil was too heavy for the roof, so they now use a lighter mixture made from coconut fibre and compost.
C Today, the farm supplies vegetables to eight local restaurants and a weekly market. Because the food travels only a short distance, it can be picked in the morning and served on the same day. Chefs say the herbs have a stronger flavour than those delivered from large farms outside the city.
D The farm also has an educational role. Every month, groups of schoolchildren visit to learn how vegetables grow, and many of them taste a fresh tomato straight from the plant for the first time. Ben believes these visits are just as important as selling food. “If children understand where food comes from, they may make healthier choices later in life,” he says.
E However, rooftop farming is not a complete answer to the city’s food needs. The farm is small, and it cannot grow crops such as rice or potatoes that need a lot of space. Running costs are also high, especially for water. Lucia admits that without income from school visits and events, the business would struggle to make a profit.
F Even so, the company is planning to open a second rooftop farm next year, on top of a new shopping centre. The owners of the building have agreed to pay for the glass walls, and the farm will use rainwater collected from the roof.
