What makes a good running shoe?

A For many beginners, running seems like the simplest sport: you just need a pair of shoes. However, choosing the wrong shoes can make running uncomfortable and may lead to pain in the feet or knees. Understanding the main parts of a running shoe can help you choose more wisely.

B A running shoe is made of several layers. The part that touches the ground is called the outsole. It is usually made of hard rubber, which gives the shoe grip on wet roads. Above the outsole is the midsole, a thicker layer of soft foam. This is the most important part for comfort, because it acts as a cushion and absorbs the shock each time your foot hits the ground.

C Inside the shoe, on top of the midsole, there is a thin, removable insole, which can be taken out and washed. The upper is the part that covers the top of the foot. In modern shoes, it is often made of a lightweight mesh material that allows air to pass through and keeps the feet cool.

D At the back of the shoe, around the heel, there is a firm piece called the heel counter. It holds the heel in place and gives support. Finally, the laces run across the top of the foot, and underneath them is the tongue, a soft strip of material that protects the top of the foot from the pressure of the laces.

E Experts in sports shops often suggest trying shoes on in the afternoon, when feet are slightly bigger, and running a few steps in the shop before buying.
