Some people argue that public money should only be spent on essential services such as hospitals and schools, and not on music, theatre or museums. I completely disagree with this view, because the arts protect a country's identity and bring important economic and social benefits.

Firstly, supporting the arts helps to preserve a nation's culture and heritage. Traditional music, crafts and historical collections are part of who people are, but many of them cannot survive on ticket sales alone. For example, a small museum of traditional costumes or a group that performs folk music may attract only a few visitors each week. If governments stop funding them, they will probably close, and this knowledge may be lost forever. Once a tradition disappears, it is extremely difficult to bring it back.

Secondly, spending on the arts can benefit society and the economy. Well-known museums, festivals and theatres attract tourists, who also spend money in local hotels, restaurants and shops. In addition, public funding allows galleries and performances to keep their prices low or even free, so that families on low incomes, students and elderly people can enjoy them too. Although healthcare and education are clearly more urgent, the amount of money needed for the arts is usually relatively small, so it is not a choice between one and the other.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that governments should continue to spend some public money on the arts. Doing so protects cultural identity, supports local economies and gives everyone the chance to enjoy culture, without taking away from essential services.

Hi Ms Lan,

I'd like to suggest that we sponsor the Children's Art Festival in our district next month.

I think there would be two main benefits. Firstly, our logo would appear on the posters and the festival website, which would help local families get to know our brand. Secondly, it would be a good opportunity for staff to volunteer and build team spirit.

The organisers are asking for a small contribution. If you agree, I could arrange a short meeting with them next week.

Best regards, Minh
