Wild neighbours

(Bài đọc tự viết; thành phố, nhà nghiên cứu và các quan sát là giả định.)

A When people think of wild animals, they usually imagine forests, mountains or grasslands far away from towns. Yet in the city of Northam, foxes walk through car parks at night, falcons nest on tall office buildings and hedgehogs search for food in back gardens. For Dr Helen Park, a wildlife researcher, these animals are a sign that cities are becoming important habitats in their own right.

B Dr Park has spent six years observing how animals in Northam have changed their behaviour. Foxes in the city centre, she says, have become almost completely nocturnal, coming out only after the streets are quiet. Some birds have started to sing earlier in the morning, before the traffic noise begins. “These animals are not just surviving,” she explains. “They are adapting to a new environment.”

C City life offers some clear advantages for wildlife. There is often plenty of food, from fruit trees in parks to the rubbish that people throw away. Buildings can also provide shelter. Tall towers, for example, are similar to the cliffs where falcons naturally build their nests, and they offer a good view of smaller birds below.

D However, the city is also full of dangers. Many animals are killed by cars, especially young foxes and hedgehogs. Others become ill from eating unhealthy human food. Glass windows are another hidden risk, because birds cannot always see them and fly straight into them.

E Dr Park believes that small changes can make a big difference. She suggests that gardeners leave small gaps under their fences so that hedgehogs can move between gardens, and that office buildings use special stickers on large windows. She also asks residents not to feed foxes, because animals that depend on people may lose their natural fear and cause problems.
