Some people argue that zoos are cruel places that should no longer exist, while others believe that they are essential for protecting wildlife. In my opinion, although poor zoos should be closed, well-managed zoos still have an important role to play.

On the one hand, there are good reasons why many people oppose zoos. Animals in captivity lose their freedom and cannot behave as they would in the wild. Large animals such as elephants or big cats naturally travel long distances, so even a large enclosure may be too small for them. In addition, some zoos, especially older or privately run ones, keep animals in small cages with little shade or space, which can cause stress and illness. In these cases, it is understandable that people consider zoos to be cruel.

On the other hand, I believe that good zoos bring significant benefits. Firstly, many modern zoos run breeding programmes for endangered species, and some animals that have become very rare in the wild are protected in this way. Secondly, zoos are educational. When children see real animals and learn about the threats they face, they may become more interested in protecting nature as adults. Finally, some zoos also act as rescue centres, caring for injured or orphaned animals that could not survive on their own.

In conclusion, while it is true that some zoos treat animals badly, I do not think all zoos should be closed. Instead, governments should set strict standards, close zoos that fail to meet them and support those that focus on conservation, education and animal welfare.

Dear Ms Chen,

Thank you very much for the kind invitation to your company's 10th anniversary dinner on 20 November. Unfortunately, I will be at a conference in Singapore that week, so I'm afraid I won't be able to attend.

Please accept my warmest congratulations on this milestone. I hope we can meet when I'm back.
