- Good morning, City Bikes. How can I help?
- Customer
- Hi. I'd like to rent two bikes for Saturday and Sunday.
- Assistant
- Sure. Would you like normal bikes or electric ones?
- Customer
- How much are they?
- Assistant
- Normal bikes are fifteen dollars a day, and electric bikes are thirty.
- Customer
- We'll take normal ones, then. Do we need to bring anything?
- Assistant
- Just a passport or a driving licence as ID. Helmets are free, but locks cost two dollars each.
- Customer
- OK. Can I give you my name? It's Olivia Prescott. That's P-R-E-S-C-O-T-T.

- Thanks. You can collect the bikes from eight a.m. Please return them by six p.m. on Sunday – actually, sorry, on Sundays we close at five, so please bring them back by five.

- Officer
- I'm pleased to announce that Parkway Swimming Pool will reopen on the first of March, after nine months of repairs.
- Officer
- Most people expected the main change to be the new changing rooms, and they are much better. But the biggest improvement is actually the new roof, which lets in natural light and keeps the building warmer in winter.
- Officer
- There's also a new learner pool for young children, which is shallower than the main pool. Swimming lessons for children will start in April, not March, because we need time to train new instructors.
- Officer
- Prices for adults will stay the same, but children under five will now swim free. And the pool will open earlier on weekdays, at six a.m., for people who want to swim before work.
- Officer
- Finally, parking is limited, so we recommend that visitors come by bus. The number twelve stops right outside.

- Tom
- So, our presentation is about recycling on campus. Should we start with some background information?
- Lan
- I think we should start with the results of our survey instead. They're more interesting, and they'll get the audience's attention.
- Tom
- Fair enough. And for the survey results, I was going to use a table.
- Lan
- Tables are hard to read on a screen. A bar chart would be clearer.
- Tom
- OK, a bar chart. Then we'll talk about the problems. The main ones were that there aren't enough recycling bins and that students don't know what can be recycled.
- Lan
- Right. Some people mentioned that the bins are dirty, but only a few, so let's not focus on that.
- Tom
- And our suggestions?
- Lan
- More bins in the library and the canteen, and clear posters next to each bin. I'll do that part, and you can finish with the conclusion.

- Lecturer
- Today I'll describe the design of the new Central Library, which opened last year and has become one of the most popular public buildings in the city.
- Lecturer
- First, the location. The architects chose a site next to the main bus station, because they wanted the library to be easy to reach for people who don't drive.
- Lecturer
- The building itself is made mostly of glass and wood. The glass lets in plenty of daylight, while the wood makes the spaces feel warm and calm.
- Lecturer
- Inside, the ground floor is designed to be noisy and social, with a café and an area for children. As you go up, the floors become quieter. The top floor is completely silent and is mainly used by students.
- Lecturer
- Finally, the roof has a garden, where visitors can read outside. It also collects rainwater, which is used to water the plants.

The night market that saved a town
(Bài đọc tự viết; thị trấn và nhân vật là giả định.)
A Ten years ago, the main street of Ben Song was almost empty after dark. A new shopping centre had opened on the edge of town, and many small shops in the centre had closed. Young people complained that there was nothing to do in the evenings, and some families had started to move to the city.
B The idea for a night market came from a group of local business owners who met regularly at a café. They suggested closing the main street to traffic on Friday and Saturday evenings and inviting local people to sell food, crafts and second-hand goods. The town council was doubtful at first, but agreed to a three-month trial.
C The first evenings were quiet, with only fifteen stalls. However, word spread quickly through social media, and within a few months the market had more than eighty stalls. Visitors began to come from nearby towns, and some tour companies added the market to their programmes.
D The market has brought clear economic benefits. Several shops on the main street have reopened, and many stallholders have turned a hobby into a small business. One woman who started by selling homemade cakes now runs a bakery with four employees.
E Not every resident is happy, though. People who live on the main street say the market is too noisy late at night, and some complain about rubbish left on the pavement. In response, the council now requires stalls to close at ten thirty, and stallholders pay a small fee that is used to employ cleaners.
F Today, the market is seen as a model for other small towns. Visitors from other councils regularly come to learn how it works. The organisers’ advice is simple: start small, listen to residents and make sure local people, not outside companies, run most of the stalls.
