The building I’d like to talk about is the new central library in my city, which opened about three years ago next to the river.
It’s quite an eye-catching building. From the outside, it looks like a stack of glass boxes placed slightly on top of each other, and in the evening, when the lights are on, you can see people reading on every floor. Inside, it’s very spacious and airy, with wooden floors, lots of plants and huge windows overlooking the water.
It’s used for much more than borrowing books. There’s a children’s area on the ground floor, study rooms that students can book, and a small café. At weekends, they also run free workshops, for example on photography or coding.
I like it for several reasons. Firstly, it’s well-designed – it’s bright but never too hot, even in summer. Secondly, it has a really calm atmosphere, which is rare in such a busy city. But most of all, I like it because it’s open to everyone, whether you’re a student, a retired person or a parent with young kids. I often take my sons there on Saturday mornings, and it’s become one of our favourite places.
