- Hi, I'm Quyen, and I help run the Riverside Repair Café. Once a month, people bring broken items – lamps, toasters, clothes, bikes – and our volunteers help them fix them, free of charge.

- People often assume we started the café to save people money. That's a nice side effect, but it wasn't so much about money as about waste. We were shocked by how many perfectly repairable things end up in landfill.

- We expected that most items would be electronic, and we do get some. But in fact the largest category is clothing – torn jeans, broken zips, that kind of thing. Bikes are the third most common.

- Our biggest challenge isn't finding volunteers – lots of retired engineers and tailors want to help. It's actually spare parts. Many products are designed so that you can't open them or buy replacement parts.

- Visitors don't just drop things off. We ask them to stay and watch, or even help, so that they learn to do simple repairs themselves next time. That's really the main purpose of the café.

- Last year we fixed around six hundred items. What surprised me most, though, was how many young people came – I'd assumed it would mostly be older residents.
