Many parents now worry about the effects of smartphones on young people, and some believe that children under 14 should not be allowed to own one at all. I agree that young children should not have unrestricted access to smartphones, but I do not think a complete ban is the best solution.
There are certainly good reasons to be cautious. Smartphones can be extremely distracting, and children who spend hours on games or social media may neglect their homework, sleep less and spend less time playing outside. In addition, young users may be exposed to harmful content or become victims of cyberbullying, often without their parents knowing. For example, a child who joins a group chat at school may receive unkind messages late at night, which can affect both their mood and their sleep.
However, a total ban would create other problems. Admittedly, it would be simple to understand; however, it would be very difficult to enforce, since children can easily use their friends' phones. More importantly, smartphones are now part of everyday life, and children need to learn how to use them responsibly before they become teenagers. A phone can also help parents stay in contact with their children, especially when they travel to school alone. A more effective approach would be to allow older children to have a phone with parental controls, clear limits on screen time and rules such as no phones in bedrooms at night.
In conclusion, while I accept that young children need protection from the risks of smartphones, I believe that careful supervision and age-appropriate rules are more effective than a complete ban.
