The pie charts compare the proportions of five types of household waste in City K in 2005 and 2025.
Overall, food remained the largest category of household waste in both years, although its share fell. The most noticeable change was the rise in the proportion of plastic, which almost doubled over the period.
In 2005, food accounted for 45% of household waste, but by 2025 this figure had dropped to roughly a third (34%). Paper also became less significant, falling from a fifth of the total to 15%. The share of glass and metal changed only slightly, decreasing from 10% to 8%.
By contrast, plastic made up only 12% of household waste in 2005, but this proportion rose to 22% in 2025, making it the second largest category. The 'other' category, which includes items such as textiles and electronics, also grew considerably, from 13% to 21%.

I am writing as a resident of Lotus Street to draw your attention to a problem with rubbish in our area and to suggest some possible solutions.
At present, there is only one large bin for the whole street, and it is collected just twice a week. As a result, it is usually full by the second day, and people leave bags of rubbish on the pavement next to it. These bags are often torn open by cats and dogs, so the street is dirty and smells unpleasant, especially in hot weather. Some elderly residents have told me they find it difficult to walk past.
One possible solution would be to increase collections to four times a week, at least during the summer months. In addition, the council could consider providing separate bins for recyclable materials, which would reduce the amount of general waste and encourage residents to recycle.
I would be happy to help organise a meeting of residents to discuss these ideas. I hope the council will consider them and look forward to hearing from you.
