In recent decades, many famous tourist destinations have seen a huge rise in the number of visitors. Although this trend brings some economic benefits, I believe that, in the case of the most popular places, the drawbacks now outweigh the advantages.
Admittedly, tourism plays an important role in many economies. Visitors spend money on hotels, food, transport and souvenirs, which creates jobs and boosts local businesses. In addition, income from tourism can help governments to improve roads, airports and other infrastructure that local people also use.
However, when the number of tourists becomes too large, serious problems appear. Firstly, overcrowding puts a strain on local services and damages the places that people come to see. In some historic towns, narrow streets are so crowded during the peak season that residents can hardly walk to work, and heritage sites can be worn down by thousands of feet every day. Secondly, mass tourism can change the character of a place. Traditional shops are often replaced by souvenir stalls and fast-food restaurants, and when many apartments are rented to short-term visitors, housing prices rise and local families may be forced to move out. As a result, a town can lose the very atmosphere that made it attractive in the first place.
In conclusion, while tourism clearly brings money and jobs, I believe the dramatic increase in visitors to popular destinations is, on balance, a negative development. Governments should manage visitor numbers more carefully, for example by encouraging travel outside the peak season and promoting less famous areas.
