- Organiser
- Hello, Bright Sparks Science Club. How can I help?
- Parent
- Hi. I'd like to book my son onto one of your holiday workshops.
- Organiser
- Of course. We have two this month: Robots on the twenty-first and Volcanoes on the twenty-second. Which one are you interested in?
- Parent
- He really wanted Robots, but I think the twenty-first is a school day for him, isn't it? Yes – so it'll have to be Volcanoes.
- Organiser
- No problem. Can I have the child's name?
- Parent
- Leo Castell. That's C-A-S-T-E-double L.
- Organiser
- And how old is Leo?
- Parent
- He's nine – oh, sorry, he turned ten last week.
- Organiser
- The workshop is for ages seven to eleven, so that's fine. It runs from nine thirty to three, and the cost is twenty-eight dollars, which includes all materials. Lunch isn't provided, so he'll need to bring a packed lunch.
- Parent
- Does he need to bring anything else?
- Organiser
- Just old clothes – some experiments can get a bit messy. We'll provide safety glasses.
- Parent
- Great. And where exactly is it?
- Organiser
- It's in the community hall on Bridge Street, next to the post office. There's no parking at the hall, but there's a car park behind the supermarket opposite.

A manager is describing the new Central Library to members of the public

- Manager
- Thank you all for coming to see the new Central Library before it officially opens. Let me tell you a bit about what's changed.
- Manager
- The building itself isn't new – it used to be the city's main post office. We chose it partly because of its location, but mostly because the large windows let in a lot of natural light, which is perfect for reading.
- Manager
- On the ground floor, you'll find the café and the children's area. We originally planned to put the children's area upstairs, but parents told us that stairs would be difficult with pushchairs.
- Manager
- The first floor has quiet study rooms, which can be booked for up to three hours at a time. And the top floor is home to our new makerspace, where members can use 3D printers and sewing machines.
- Manager
- Membership is still free. What's new is that members can now borrow laptops and tablets, not just books, for up to one week.
- Manager
- Opening hours are longer than before. We'll be open until nine every weekday evening. On Sundays, we'll open in the afternoon only.
- Manager
- Finally, we're looking for volunteers, especially to help older visitors use computers. If you're interested, please speak to the staff at the information desk.

Two students, Mai and Joe, are discussing their presentation on reducing plastic use at their university

- Mai
- So, Joe, we need to decide how to organise the presentation. I think we should start with the survey results.
- Joe
- Hmm, I'm not sure. Wouldn't it be better to begin with a short video showing how much plastic the canteen throws away? It would grab people's attention.
- Mai
- That's a good point. OK, the video first, then the survey.
- Joe
- About the survey – the most surprising result for me was that most students said they'd use a reusable cup if it were cheaper.
- Mai
- Really? I expected that. What surprised me was how few students knew that the campus has water fountains.
- Joe
- True. So for our recommendations – I think a discount for people who bring their own cup would be the easiest to introduce.
- Mai
- I agree it's easy, but I think better signs for the water fountains would have a bigger impact.
- Joe
- Maybe. Let's include both, but put yours first.
- Mai
- Fine. And who does what? I'm happy to present the survey, since I designed it.
- Joe
- Then I'll do the video and the recommendations. But could you make the slides? You're much better at design than me.
- Mai
- Sure. Let's practise together on Thursday.

The town that turned off the lights
(Bài đọc tự viết; thị trấn, nhân vật và số liệu là giả định.)
A Three years ago, the small town of Eastmere made an unusual decision. To save money, the town council agreed to switch off most of its streetlights between midnight and five in the morning. Lights on main roads and near the hospital would stay on, but those on quiet residential streets would be turned off.
B The reaction from residents was mixed. Some were delighted, especially those who had complained for years that light shining into their bedrooms kept them awake. Others were worried. Several older residents said they would feel unsafe walking home at night, and a local shop owner feared that break-ins would increase.
C After the first year, the council published a report on the results. The town’s electricity bill for street lighting had fallen by almost forty per cent. Contrary to many people’s fears, police records showed no increase in crime. In fact, the number of reported burglaries was slightly lower than in the previous year, although the report noted that this might have happened for other reasons.
D There were also unexpected benefits. A group of amateur astronomers found that they could see far more stars from the town than before, and they began organising monthly stargazing evenings, which have become popular with families. Local wildlife groups reported that bats, which avoid bright light, had returned to some gardens.
E Not everyone has been won over. Some residents still say they feel nervous in the dark, and the council has responded by installing motion-sensor lights on a few paths, which switch on only when someone walks past. The council leader, Martin Hale, admits that the decision was “not perfect,” but says that most people now accept it. Other towns in the region are watching Eastmere closely before making similar changes.
