The bar chart compares the average amount of time that four age groups in Country N spent on social media and television each day, while the pie chart shows adults' main source of news.
Overall, time spent on social media fell steadily with age, whereas the opposite was true for television. Social media was also the most common main source of news, although TV was not far behind.
The youngest group, aged 16 to 24, spent 210 minutes a day on social media, more than four times as long as they spent watching TV (50 minutes). The figures for social media then decreased in each older group, to only 30 minutes among people over 65. By contrast, TV viewing rose with age, from 90 minutes for 25–44-year-olds to 230 minutes for the oldest group.
As for news, 38% of adults relied mainly on social media and 30% on television. News websites were the main source for a fifth of adults, while newspapers and radio were mentioned by only 7% and 5% respectively.

Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to your article "A Generation That Ignores the News", which was published on Monday. While I agree that fewer young people buy printed newspapers, I believe the article gave a misleading picture.
In my experience, young people follow the news a great deal, but in different ways. My younger brother and his university friends, for instance, regularly watch short news videos and listen to podcasts on their way to class. They often discuss current events in detail, sometimes more than older members of my family. The article seemed to assume that if people do not read a newspaper, they are not interested in the news at all.
It would be helpful if your newspaper could reach young readers where they already are. For example, you could publish short video summaries of local stories on social media, or invite students to write a weekly column about issues that matter to them, such as housing and jobs.
I hope you will consider publishing this letter, and I look forward to reading more about young people's views in your newspaper.
Yours faithfully, Ngo Thanh Tung
