Trust me, I’m an influencer
(Bài đọc tự viết; nhà nghiên cứu và khảo sát là giả định.)
A Not long ago, companies spent most of their advertising budgets on television, newspapers and billboards. Today, a growing share goes to social media “influencers” – people with large numbers of followers who recommend products in their posts and videos. For many young consumers, these personalities are more familiar than any traditional celebrity.
B The appeal for companies is clear. Influencers often speak directly to a specific audience, such as people interested in fitness, cooking or travel. Their followers tend to see them as ordinary people rather than salespeople, and so their recommendations can feel more trustworthy than a traditional advertisement.
C However, this sense of trust is exactly what worries critics. When an influencer is paid to endorse a product, followers may not realise that the post is an advertisement. Dr Sofia Lind, who studies digital marketing, carried out a survey of young social media users. She found that many of them could not tell the difference between a sponsored post and a genuine personal recommendation, especially when the post was a short video.
D In response, regulators in a number of countries now require influencers to disclose clearly when they have been paid, for example by labelling a post as an advertisement. Dr Lind welcomes these rules but believes they are not enough on their own. “Labels are often small and easy to miss,” she says. “Young people also need to be taught how advertising works.”
E Some influencers have chosen to be more open than the rules require. They explain in detail why they agreed to work with a company and even mention products they did not like. According to Dr Lind, this honesty does not seem to reduce their popularity; in some cases, their audiences actually grow.
