Children today see a huge number of advertisements on television, websites and mobile games. Some people believe that adverts targeting children should be completely banned. I completely agree with this view, for two main reasons.
Firstly, young children are particularly vulnerable to persuasive techniques. Unlike adults, they often cannot tell the difference between an advertisement and an ordinary programme or video, and they tend to believe what they are told. Advertisers use bright colours, cartoon characters and catchy songs to make products seem exciting. As a result, children may want things not because they need them, but simply because an advert has made them seem fun. A child watching a cartoon, for example, may suddenly see a toy advert and immediately ask for that toy, without understanding that the message was designed to sell it.
Secondly, advertising aimed at children can harm both their health and their families. Many adverts for young audiences promote sugary snacks and drinks, which may encourage unhealthy eating habits. Moreover, children often pester their parents to buy the products they have seen, which puts commercial pressure on families with limited budgets. Some people argue that a ban is unnecessary because parents can simply say no. However, this argument ignores the fact that adverts are deliberately designed to influence children, and it is unfair to expect parents to fight against powerful marketing campaigns every day.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that advertising aimed at children should be banned, as it takes advantage of their inexperience and can damage their health and family life.
