As artificial intelligence becomes more powerful, some people predict that it will eventually make doctors unnecessary. Although I believe that technology will play an increasingly important role in healthcare, I disagree that it will be able to replace doctors completely.
Admittedly, computers are already very good at certain medical tasks. AI systems can analyse large numbers of medical scans quickly and may be able to detect some problems that a tired human might miss. They can also handle routine tasks, such as booking appointments and reminding patients to take their medicine. In this way, technology is likely to save doctors a great deal of time.
However, being a doctor involves much more than identifying a disease. Firstly, many medical decisions require human judgement. Two patients with the same illness may need different treatment because of their age, other health conditions or personal wishes, and a doctor must weigh up these factors and discuss them with the patient. Secondly, patients need empathy and trust, especially when they receive bad news. A computer may be able to state a diagnosis, but it cannot comfort a frightened patient or understand the worries of their family. Finally, there is the question of accountability: if a machine makes a serious mistake, it is not clear who would be responsible.
In conclusion, while AI will almost certainly become a valuable assistant to doctors, I do not believe it will replace them. The most likely future is one in which technology handles routine work, allowing doctors to spend more time on the human side of medicine.
