The idea of a four-day working week has attracted growing attention in recent years. While supporters claim that it would make both workers and companies better off, critics believe that it is unrealistic and could damage the economy. In my view, a shorter week can be highly effective in certain sectors, but it should not be imposed as a one-size-fits-all rule.

Those in favour argue that a four-day week would improve employees' well-being without reducing output. Having an extra day to rest, deal with family matters or pursue hobbies, workers may return to their jobs feeling refreshed and more focused. For businesses, this could mean fewer sick days and lower staff turnover, since experienced employees would be less likely to leave because of burnout. In office-based industries such as software or marketing, where much time is lost in unnecessary meetings, the same work can often be completed in fewer days.

Opponents, however, point out that many jobs cannot simply be compressed. Hospitals, public transport and emergency services need staff round the clock, and reducing working days would require hiring more people, which would increase costs. Similarly, small businesses that depend on serving customers every day might lose income if they closed on Fridays. For these reasons, critics fear that a universal four-day week would reduce productivity across the economy as a whole.

In my opinion, both arguments have merit, which is why sector-specific solutions are more realistic than a single national policy. Companies whose work is mainly project-based should be encouraged to trial shorter weeks, while essential services could instead offer flexible shift patterns.

In conclusion, although a four-day week is not suitable for every industry, it can bring real benefits where the nature of the work allows it.
