Will machines take our jobs?
(Bài đọc tự viết; các chuyên gia và nhận định là giả định.)
A Few topics generate as much anxiety as the effect of artificial intelligence on employment. Every new development seems to bring fresh headlines predicting that millions of jobs will disappear. Yet those who study the issue closely are far from united. We asked five specialists for their views.
B Economist Dr Paul Reyes takes a historical view. “Every major technology, from the steam engine to the computer, has destroyed some jobs and created others,” he says. “The difference this time may be speed. If change happens faster than workers can retrain, there will be a painful transition, even if the long-term outcome is positive.”
C Computer scientist Professor Aiko Tanaka is more cautious about bold predictions. She points out that many tasks that look simple to humans, such as folding laundry or understanding sarcasm, remain difficult for machines. “Some people imagine that AI will soon do everything,” she says. “I think that is very unlikely in the near future.” In her view, most jobs will be augmented rather than replaced: AI will take over specific tasks within a job, leaving people to focus on others.
D For Maria Lopes, who advises trade unions, the central question is not how many jobs survive but who benefits. “Productivity gains from automation could raise wages,” she argues, “but only if workers have a voice in how the technology is introduced. Otherwise, the profits will go mainly to shareholders, and inequality will grow.”
E Business consultant Ken Abara is more optimistic. He has seen companies use AI to remove repetitive paperwork, allowing staff to spend more time with customers. “The firms that do best are the ones that invest in training their people, not just in software,” he says. He rejects the idea that older employees cannot adapt. “In my experience, experience matters. Older staff often understand customers’ needs far better.”
F Education researcher Dr Sunita Rao focuses on young people. She worries that entry-level jobs, which traditionally gave graduates a chance to learn on the job, are among the easiest to automate. “If the bottom rungs of the career ladder disappear, how will young people gain experience?” she asks. She believes schools and universities should place more emphasis on skills such as judgement and communication, which are harder to automate.
G Despite their differences, all five agree on one point: the outcome is not decided by technology alone. Decisions made by governments, companies and individuals will shape whether AI makes working life better or worse.
✅ Câu 1–8: Match each statement with the correct person. (A = Paul Reyes · B = Aiko Tanaka · C = Maria Lopes · D = Ken Abara · E = Sunita Rao)
1. The pace of change may cause short-term difficulties.
2. AI will mainly change parts of jobs rather than whole jobs.
3. Employees should be involved in decisions about new technology.
4. Successful companies spend money on developing their staff.
5. Jobs for people starting their careers are particularly at risk.
6. Claims that AI will soon be able to do everything are exaggerated.
7. Older workers can be particularly valuable.
8. Without the right conditions, automation could increase differences in wealth.
✅ Câu 9–10
9. What do all five experts agree on?
10. Which skills does Dr Rao want education to emphasise?
🧩 3. Ngôn ngữ trọng tâm – 10 phút: tóm tắt quan điểm bằng một cụm
| Chuyên gia | Tóm tắt (tiếng Anh) | Từ khóa phân biệt |
|---|---|---|
| Reyes | speed of change → painful transition | history, retrain |
| Tanaka | augment, not replace; bold predictions unlikely | specific tasks |
| Lopes | who benefits? workers need a voice | wages, inequality |
| Abara | invest in people; older staff valuable | training, customers |
| Rao | entry-level jobs at risk; teach judgement | young people, career ladder |
Guidelines for using AI tools at work (extract) (giả định)
- Staff may use approved AI tools to draft emails, summarise public documents and check grammar.
- Do not enter confidential information (client names, contracts, salary data) into any external AI tool.
- All AI-generated content must be checked by a person before it is sent to clients.
- If AI has been used to produce a significant part of a report, this should be disclosed to your manager.
- Only tools on the approved list (see intranet) may be used.
✅ Được phép hay không?
You want to paste a client contract into an AI tool to summarise it. Allowed?
