Across many industries, tasks that were once performed by people are now handled by machines and artificial intelligence. Although this trend creates genuine problems for some workers, I believe its advantages outweigh its disadvantages, provided that governments and employers manage the transition responsibly.

The most serious drawback is the impact on employment. Workers whose jobs consist mainly of routine tasks, such as data entry or processing simple customer requests, may find their roles made redundant. For people in their forties or fifties, retraining for a completely new career can be difficult and stressful, and some may face long periods of unemployment. Were companies to introduce automation without any support for these employees, inequality would almost certainly increase.

However, the benefits are both larger and more lasting. Automated systems can carry out repetitive and error-prone work faster and more accurately than humans, which reduces costs and improves the quality of services. In factories and warehouses, robots can take over dangerous tasks such as lifting heavy loads, leading to fewer workplace injuries. Moreover, automation frees up employees' time for work that requires judgement, creativity and personal contact. A bank that automates its paperwork, for instance, can allow staff to spend more time advising customers, which, in turn, may improve customer satisfaction.

While the problems of job loss are real, they are largely transitional and can be reduced through retraining programmes and financial support, whereas the gains in safety and efficiency are permanent.

In conclusion, I believe that automation is, on balance, a positive development. Its benefits will be shared fairly, however, only if employers and governments invest in helping affected workers to develop new skills.
