The pie chart breaks down electricity use in an average apartment in City V by appliance, while the table compares monthly consumption in the hot and cool seasons in 2015 and 2025.
Overall, air conditioning was by far the largest user of electricity, and monthly consumption rose in both seasons, with a much sharper increase in the hot season. The dominant role of air conditioning may help to explain this seasonal difference.
According to the pie chart, air conditioning accounted for almost half (45%) of all the electricity used in an apartment. Water heating was the second largest category at 20%, followed by the fridge at 15%. Lighting used only a small fraction of the total, at 8%, while other appliances made up the remaining 12%.
The table shows that in 2015 an average apartment used 260 kWh per month in the hot season and 170 kWh in the cool season. By 2025, hot-season consumption had climbed to 340 kWh, a rise of roughly 30%, whereas cool-season use increased only slightly, to 190 kWh.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing on behalf of several residents of Block A to propose some changes that could reduce energy use in the building's shared areas.
At present, the lights in the corridors and stairwells stay on twenty-four hours a day, even though these areas are almost empty late at night. In addition, the air conditioning in the ground-floor lobby runs at a very low temperature from early morning until midnight, often when no one is there.
We would like to propose that the board install motion sensors in the corridors and stairwells, so that lights switch on only when people are present. We also suggest setting the lobby air conditioning to a higher temperature and limiting it to the busiest hours of the day.
Although these measures would involve an upfront cost, they would reduce the building's electricity bill, which is shared by all residents through the monthly service charge. They would also make the building more environmentally friendly, which many younger residents care about.
We would welcome the opportunity to discuss this at the next residents' meeting.
Yours faithfully, Nguyen Hoang Anh
