Q: What’s the weather usually like where you live? It’s tropical, so there are really only two seasons. From around May to October it’s the rainy season – sweltering and muggy during the day, with sudden downpours in the late afternoon. The rest of the year is drier and a lot more pleasant, especially in the early mornings.
Q: Do you try to save electricity at home? We do, partly to save money and partly because it seems wasteful not to. The biggest thing for us is the air conditioning – we only use it at night and set it to twenty-six degrees. We’ve also got into the habit of unplugging chargers, though I’m not sure how much difference that actually makes.

I’d like to talk about a power cut that happened in my neighbourhood about three summers ago, during one of the hottest weeks of the year.
It started on a Saturday evening, just as we were about to have dinner. At first, we thought it would only last a few minutes, as short outages are quite common when there’s a heavy storm. But it turned out that a transformer near our street had been damaged by lightning, and the electricity didn’t come back until late the next afternoon.
The hardest part was the heat. Without fans or air conditioning, the flat became unbearably hot, and nobody in my family got much sleep. We made do with candlelight for the evening and ate the food from the fridge before it went off. The next morning, a lot of neighbours went to a café on the main road that had a generator, so it ended up being quite a social occasion – people were charging their phones and chatting with neighbours they normally only nodded to in the lift.
Looking back, I felt frustrated at the time, but it also made me realise how dependent we are on electricity for almost everything. Since then, we’ve kept a torch and a power bank in the kitchen drawer, just in case.
