Learning in small pieces

A For most of the twentieth century, a university degree was the main proof that a person had gained advanced knowledge. Degrees typically took three or four years and covered a broad range of subjects. Today, a growing number of learners are choosing a different route: short, focused courses known as micro-credentials, which certify a specific skill such as data visualisation or project management.

B The appeal is easy to understand. A micro-credential can often be completed in a few weeks, usually online and part-time, which allows people to study while they work. Unlike a degree, it also tends to be relatively inexpensive. For adults who need to update their skills quickly because their job is changing, this flexibility can make the difference between learning something new and not learning at all.

C At the fictional Harbourside University, which began offering micro-credentials five years ago, the most popular courses are in digital skills. Course director Dr Ines Moreau explains that many of these courses are “stackable”: a learner who completes four related micro-credentials can combine them into a larger qualification, roughly equivalent to one semester of a degree programme.

D Employers’ attitudes, however, are mixed. In a survey of local companies conducted by the university, most managers said they valued practical skills more than academic qualifications. Yet fewer than half said they actually knew what a micro-credential was, and many admitted that, when choosing between candidates, they still relied mainly on degrees because they were familiar with them.

E Quality is another concern. Because micro-credentials are relatively new, there is no single standard for what they should include or how they should be assessed. Some are accredited by universities or professional bodies, while others are offered by private companies with little external checking. Critics worry that, without proper quality assurance, learners may pay for certificates that employers do not trust.

F It is worth remembering that short courses are not entirely new. In the 1990s, many companies sent staff on short training programmes, and evening classes have existed for far longer. What has changed, Moreau argues, is the combination of online delivery, digital certificates that can be shared instantly, and the ability to build up credits over time.

G Looking ahead, Moreau expects that degrees and micro-credentials will increasingly be seen as complementary rather than as competitors. “A degree gives you a foundation,” she says. “Micro-credentials let you keep building on it throughout your career.” She predicts that within the next decade, many universities will allow students to complete part of their degree through stackable short courses.
