Bringing an old house back to life

(Bài đọc tự viết; ngôi nhà, dự án, nhân vật và số liệu là giả định.)

When the fictional town of Hoa Son decided to restore a wooden merchant’s house built more than two centuries ago, the project leader, architect Minh Chau, insisted that nothing should be touched until the building had been fully understood. “The worst mistakes in restoration happen when people start repairing too early,” she explains.

The first stage was therefore documentation. Over three months, the team photographed every part of the house, measured each beam and column, and produced detailed drawings. They also interviewed elderly residents, some of whom remembered how the house had looked in their childhood, which helped the team identify later changes that were not part of the original design.

Before any repairs could begin, the team had to assess the condition of the materials. Samples of wood were sent to a laboratory to test for insect damage and decay. The results showed that around a third of the main columns were seriously weakened at the base, where moisture from the ground had entered the wood.

The roof was then carefully dismantled. Each tile was numbered so that it could be returned to exactly the same position later. Where possible, the original tiles were cleaned and reused; damaged ones were replaced with new tiles made by a local workshop using traditional clay and firing methods.

Repairing the columns required the skills of experienced carpenters. Rather than replacing whole columns, the craftsmen cut away only the decayed sections and joined new pieces of the same type of wood using traditional techniques, without metal nails. This approach, Chau argues, keeps as much of the original material as possible, which is essential if a building is to remain authentic.

Once the structure was secure, the roof was reassembled and the walls were repainted using natural pigments. The final stage was to install discreet lighting and a small exhibition explaining the restoration, before the house was opened to the public. The whole project took almost four years – twice as long as originally planned – largely because the condition of the columns turned out to be far worse than expected.
