I’d like to talk about an old citadel in a small town in central Vietnam that I visited with a group of colleagues about two years ago, during a company trip.

As far as I know, parts of it date back several centuries, although many of the buildings were rebuilt after floods and wars. It’s surrounded by a moat and thick stone walls, and inside there’s a series of courtyards, a few restored halls and some ruins that have been left exactly as they were found.

What struck me most was how quiet it was. We arrived early in the morning, before the tour buses, and there were only a handful of other visitors. Walking through the courtyards, you could hear birds and the wind in the trees rather than traffic. In one of the halls, there was a small exhibition with photographs from the early twentieth century, showing families who had lived and worked inside the walls.

I found the whole experience quite awe-inspiring. It made me realise how much history there is in places that most foreign tourists never visit. At the same time, I felt slightly sad, because a local guide told us that some parts of the site are in poor condition and there isn’t enough money to restore them properly. Since then, I’ve tried to visit smaller heritage sites whenever I travel, rather than only the famous ones.
