As international travel has become cheaper and easier, many of the world's most famous historic sites now receive far more visitors than they were ever designed to handle. This essay will examine the main problems caused by overtourism and suggest two ways of addressing them.
The most obvious problem is physical damage. Ancient buildings were not built to withstand thousands of visitors a day, and the constant flow of people causes wear and tear on floors, steps and walls. Humidity from crowds can also harm paintings and wooden structures inside temples and palaces. A second problem affects local communities. In small historic towns, streets become so crowded during the peak season that residents struggle to go about their daily lives, and shops serving locals are gradually replaced by souvenir stalls.
To reduce physical damage, authorities could introduce timed tickets with a daily visitor cap. Visitors would book a specific entry time in advance, which would spread them across the day and prevent the site from exceeding its carrying capacity. Although this might reduce ticket revenue, prices could be set slightly higher at peak times, which would make up for some of the loss while also encouraging off-peak visits. To ease pressure on local residents, tourism boards could promote less famous attractions in the surrounding region, for example through combined tickets that include nearby villages or museums. This would spread the load more evenly and allow more communities to benefit from tourism income.
In conclusion, overtourism damages historic sites and disrupts local life, but carefully managed entry systems and the promotion of alternative destinations could protect heritage while still allowing people to enjoy it.

Hi all! Reminder for Friday's visit: we meet at the main gate at 7.45 – our timed entry slot is 8.00, and late arrivals can't join. Please wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. Tip: bring water and a hat, as there's little shade in the courtyards. See you there!
