The chart compares the number of people who visited the Riverside Art Museum in person with the number who viewed its online exhibitions over a ten-year period from 2016 to 2026.
Overall, physical visits generally increased, apart from a sharp fall in 2020, when the museum was closed for renovation. Online visits, by contrast, rose dramatically in that year and, despite declining slightly afterwards, remained far higher than at the start of the period.
In 2016 and 2018, physical visits were much higher than online ones, at 210,000 and 230,000 respectively, compared with just 10,000 and 25,000 online visits.
In 2020, however, the pattern changed. Physical visits dropped to 90,000, while online visits jumped to 150,000, overtaking physical visits for the only time in the period.
After the museum reopened, physical visits recovered quickly, reaching 180,000 in 2022 and climbing to a peak of 260,000 in 2026, which exceeded their pre-2020 level. Meanwhile, online visits fell back to 130,000 in 2022 and 110,000 in 2024, before rising slightly to 120,000 in 2026 – still twelve times the 2016 figure.
