Museums in a digital age
(Bài đọc tự viết; bảo tàng và nhân vật là giả định.)
A When the City Museum of Modern Art decided to digitise its entire collection, some staff feared that putting high-quality images online would discourage people from visiting. If anyone could see every painting on a phone, why would they buy a ticket? Three years later, those fears appear to have been largely unfounded. Footfall has remained broadly stable, and the museum’s website now receives far more visits than the building itself.
B In my view, the most important effect of digitisation has been on accessibility. People who live far away, who cannot afford to travel, or who have disabilities that make visiting difficult can now explore the collection in detail. This, surely, is a good thing. A museum that keeps most of its collection in storage, seen by no one, is failing in one of its basic duties.
C Yet I am less convinced by the current enthusiasm for “immersive” exhibitions, in which famous paintings are projected onto the walls of huge rooms, often accompanied by music. These shows are undeniably popular, and they may introduce art to people who would never enter a traditional gallery. But they risk turning artworks into background decoration. The curator Elena Marsh, who has organised several such events, admits that visitors “tend to take photographs rather than look closely”.
D There is also the question of authenticity. Standing in front of an original painting – seeing the texture of the paint and the actual size of the canvas – is a different experience from viewing a reproduction, however good. I would not go so far as to say that digital images have no value; they are excellent for study and preparation. But they should complement the visit, not replace it.
E Museums, then, face a balancing act. They must use technology to widen access and increase engagement, while still giving visitors reasons to come and see the real thing. The institutions that manage this best will, I suspect, be those that treat their websites not as a substitute for the building but as an invitation to it.
