Lecturer
This morning I'm going to talk about habits – what they are, how they form, and what this means for anyone trying to change their behaviour.
Lecturer
First, a definition. A habit is a behaviour that has become largely automatic. In other words, we do it without much conscious thought – like checking our phone as soon as we wake up. This is useful, because it frees the brain to focus on other things.
Lecturer
So how do habits form? One widely used model describes three parts. The first is the cue – something in the environment that triggers the behaviour, such as a time of day, a place or a feeling. The second is the routine, which is the behaviour itself. And the third is the reward – the benefit we get, which reinforces the link between the cue and the routine. Each time the cycle is repeated, the habit tends to become stronger.
Lecturer
An interesting point here is the role of context. Many habits seem to be closely tied to particular places. This may explain why people sometimes find it easier to change their routines when they move house or start a new job – the old cues are simply no longer there.
Lecturer
What does this mean in practice? Well, it suggests that relying on willpower alone is often not enough. A more effective approach may be to change the environment. If you want to read more, for instance, you might leave a book on your pillow, so that the cue is impossible to miss. If you want to stop snacking at work, you could keep biscuits out of sight, in a cupboard rather than on your desk.
Lecturer
Finally, a word of caution. People often expect new habits to form quickly, but the time it takes appears to vary considerably from person to person and from one behaviour to another. So it's important not to give up if a new routine still feels difficult after the first few weeks.
