The spread of false information online has led to debate about who should be held responsible: the companies that run social media platforms or the individuals who use them. In my view, responsibility should be shared, but platforms should carry the greater share because of the scale of their influence.
Those who place responsibility on users argue that adults should be accountable for their own actions. Just as a person who repeats a rumour in conversation is responsible for what they say, someone who shares a false post online has made a choice. Supporters of this view also point out that holding platforms responsible could lead to excessive censorship, as companies might remove legitimate posts simply to avoid criticism, which would threaten freedom of expression.
Others insist, however, that platforms cannot avoid responsibility. Their algorithms often decide which content millions of people see, and posts that provoke strong emotions tend to be promoted because they keep users engaged. In this sense, platforms do not merely host false information; they can actively amplify it. Moreover, while it must be acknowledged that no company can check every post, platforms have far greater resources than individual users. They could, for example, be required to label disputed claims clearly, reduce the visibility of posts that have been flagged as false, and respond quickly to reports.
I agree with this second view, although I accept that users also have a role. An individual who shares a false story about a local emergency should be expected to correct it. However, it seems unrealistic to expect millions of users to verify everything, when the companies that profit from attention are in a much stronger position to act.
In conclusion, both platforms and users bear some responsibility, but I believe that the companies, given their power and resources, should be held more accountable.

Subject: Correction to Monday's report
Dear Mr Long,
I'm writing to correct an error in the report I sent on Monday. On page 3, the total for October should read 1,240 units, not 1,420 – the digits were transposed. I've attached the corrected version and checked the other figures against our records. Apologies for any confusion this may have caused.
Kind regards, Mai
