The diagram illustrates the process by which a weather balloon collects data about conditions in the atmosphere.

Overall, there are seven stages, which can be divided into three phases: preparation and release, ascent and measurement, and descent. The process begins at a weather station and ends when the instruments land, sometimes to be recovered.

First, the balloon is filled with a gas that is lighter than air, and it is then released from the weather station. As it rises, the air pressure around it falls, which causes the gas inside to expand, so the balloon steadily increases in size.

Throughout this ascent, a box of instruments known as a radiosonde measures conditions in the air and transmits the data to a receiver on the ground every few seconds. This is the key stage of the process.

Eventually, the balloon expands so much that it bursts. At this point, a parachute opens, and the radiosonde descends slowly to the ground. Finally, it lands, and in some cases it is recovered.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to arrange a group visit to your science centre on behalf of Hoa Sen Lower Secondary School, where I teach science.

We would be a group of thirty-two students aged thirteen and fourteen, accompanied by four teachers. We would like to visit on a weekday in the second half of January, ideally arriving at around 9 a.m. and leaving by 1 p.m.

Our students are currently studying the atmosphere and weather, so we would particularly like to see your exhibition on climate and space. If possible, we would also be very interested in booking the weather balloon demonstration advertised on your website, as it would help the students understand what they have read in class.

Could you please let me know the cost per student and whether there is a discount for school groups? I would also be grateful if you could tell me whether there is an indoor area where students can eat a packed lunch, and whether the centre is accessible for a student who uses a wheelchair.
