- Welcome, everyone. Before we go out, let me show you the main places on the map. We're here in the visitor centre, just inside the entrance.

- If you go straight out of the back door, you'll see the lake. Follow the path round to the left, along the edge of the woodland, and you'll reach the north shore. There are two buildings there. The first one you come to – the one closer to the woodland – is the bird hide, where you'll be doing most of your bird counts.

- Carry on along the north shore and the second building is the viewing tower. It's considerably taller than the hide, so it's by far the best place to see the whole reserve.

- Now, back near the car park, between the car park and the woodland, there's the picnic area. Please remind visitors that they shouldn't feed the ducks.

- Right next to us, just east of the visitor centre, is the butterfly garden. That was created only last year by volunteers like you.

- And finally, up in the far north-east corner of the reserve – not the building just above the meadow, which is an old pump house we don't use, but the one beyond it, right in the corner – is the research station. That's for staff only, I'm afraid.

- A few practical points. Your main task this season will be counting birds, because spring is the breeding season. We now record around twice as many species as we did ten years ago, although numbers of some ducks are nowhere near as high as they used to be.

- Shifts last four hours, and you'll always work in pairs. And please wear boots – after rain, the paths near the lake can be very muddy.
