Whether a single world language would benefit humanity or threaten cultural identity is a question that is becoming more relevant as international communication grows. In my view, a shared second language is highly beneficial, but only if it complements, rather than replaces, people's mother tongues.

Those who support a global language point to the practical advantages. If everyone could speak the same language, communication across borders would become far easier, reducing the cost and misunderstandings involved in translation. Businesses could cooperate more efficiently, scientists could share research without delay, and travellers could interact with local people wherever they went. A common language could also make knowledge more accessible, since important information would not be limited to those who speak particular languages.

Opponents, however, argue that these benefits would come at a high price. Languages are closely linked to culture, and many communities see their language as central to who they are. Traditional stories, humour and ways of describing the world are often difficult to translate, and if a single language came to dominate everyday life, these could gradually disappear. The result might be a more homogenised world, in which linguistic diversity – a valuable part of human heritage – was greatly reduced.

In my opinion, the key distinction is between a shared second language and a single language that replaces all others. The first offers most of the advantages described above, while the second carries serious risks. Many people already grow up bilingual, using one language at home and another for work or study, which suggests that the two goals are not incompatible.

In conclusion, although a world in which everyone spoke only one language would be culturally poorer, a widely shared second language can bring people together without erasing their identities.
