🗣️ 2. Đầu vào – 20 phút

Q: Do you think people in your country are polite? Generally, yes, though it depends what you mean by polite. People are very respectful to older people – we use different forms of address depending on someone’s age. On the other hand, in busy places like markets or on the road, people can come across as quite impatient. So I’d say it’s more about the situation than the people.

Q: How many languages can you speak? Two, really – Vietnamese and English. I studied a bit of French at university, but I’ve forgotten most of it. I can still order a coffee, but that’s about it.

🗂️ Part 2 – Thẻ đề

Describe a time when you had difficulty communicating with someone.

You should say:

  • who the person was
  • where and when it happened
  • why it was difficult to communicate
  • and explain how you solved the problem.

Bài mẫu do khóa học viết; câu chuyện là giả định.

I’d like to describe a phone call I had with a supplier from another country about two years ago, when I’d just started my current job.

I needed to confirm a delivery date for some equipment, and I’d been given the name of a manager at the supplier’s office. I’d only ever communicated with him by email, and his emails were always very clear, so I assumed the call would be easy.

It turned out to be much harder than I expected. For a start, he had an accent I wasn’t used to, and the line wasn’t very good. On top of that, he spoke very fast and used a lot of expressions I didn’t know – at one point he said the delivery was “in the pipeline”, and I had no idea whether that meant it had already been sent or not. I was lost for words for a moment, because I didn’t want to keep asking him to repeat things and seem unprofessional.

In the end, I decided to be honest. I said something like, “I’m sorry, I want to make sure I’ve got this right – could you confirm the date by email after our call?” He was very relaxed about it and sent me a summary ten minutes later. I learnt that it’s much better to check than to pretend you’ve understood. Since then, I always follow up important phone calls with a short email, and I find it saves a lot of misunderstandings.
