Overall, enrolments rose in all courses except French, with Asian languages showing the most dramatic growth, although English remained by far the most popular. Career prospects were the most common reason for learning, cited by almost half of all learners.
The number of people studying English increased from 820 to 1,050 over the decade. However, the most striking changes were in Japanese and Korean. Japanese enrolments almost tripled, from 150 to 420, while those for Korean rose more than sixfold, from just 60 to 380. French was the only language to decline, falling from 240 to 190.
As for learners' motivations, 44% said they were studying mainly to improve their career prospects. Travel and personal interest were the next most common reasons, at 20% and 18% respectively. Relatively few learners were motivated by plans to study abroad (10%) or by family or heritage (8%).

I've decided to learn Japanese. My company has just started working with a partner in Osaka, and my manager has hinted that people who can speak some Japanese might be asked to join the project. Apart from that, I've always loved Japanese films, so it feels like the right time.
The problem is that I'm not making much progress. I downloaded an app and used it every day for the first two weeks, but I soon got bored with the same kind of exercises. I've also tried watching films with Japanese subtitles, but they go far too fast. And honestly, after a long day at work, it's hard to find the energy.
You learnt Spanish and German while working full-time, didn't you? How did you stay motivated? Do you think it's worth paying for a teacher, or is it better to find a language exchange partner?
