The maps illustrate how an area of farmland called Marsh End was transformed into a wetland reserve between 2006 and 2026.
Overall, the agricultural landscape was replaced by natural habitats, the most significant of which is a large lake. In addition, facilities for visitors and researchers were introduced, while almost all of the original farm buildings disappeared.
In 2006, the western half of the site was occupied by wheat fields. By 2026, part of this land had been planted with woodland, while the rest had been turned into reed beds and a large lake, which also incorporates the small pond and drainage channel that used to lie in the centre. This lake now dominates the reserve.
On the eastern side, the farmhouse was converted into a research station, and the barns to the south of it were removed to make way for a meadow. Meanwhile, the cattle pasture next to the main road was replaced by a car park and a visitor centre, making the reserve easily accessible from the road.

I am writing to apply for a place on your weekend volunteer programme at Marsh End Wetland Reserve, which I saw advertised on your website.
I have visited the reserve regularly since it opened, and I have been impressed by how quickly birds have returned to the area.
