Q: Are there many parks in your city? There are a few, but nowhere near as many as there should be for a city this size. The main one near me is considerably smaller than it used to be, because part of it was turned into a car park. That said, it’s still by far the nicest place to walk in the early morning.

The place I’d like to talk about is a small bay on the coast, about three hours’ drive from where I live. I won’t name it, partly because I’d rather it stayed quiet!
It’s a curved beach with very fine white sand, surrounded by low hills covered in pine trees. When I first went there, about eight years ago, there were only a couple of family-run guesthouses and a tiny seafood restaurant. The water was so clear that you could see small fish around your feet, and in the evening the only sound was the waves.
Unfortunately, it’s under threat. Over the last few years, two large hotels have been built on the hillside, and a third is apparently being planned. The construction has led to soil being washed into the sea when it rains, which in turn makes the water much cloudier than before. There’s also considerably more litter on the beach, especially plastic bottles, because there are far more visitors but nowhere near enough bins.
I think it should be protected because it’s one of the last unspoilt beaches I know. I’m not against tourism – the local families depend on it – but I’d like to see limits on new building and a proper system for collecting rubbish. If nothing changes, I’m afraid it’ll end up just like every other overdeveloped resort, and that would be a real loss, both for the wildlife and for the people who live there.
